Gasping for breath with a plastic bag over his head, an off-duty police officer, who was the victim of robbers, wiggled his way to the edge of the Solomon Hochoy Highway yesterday, before he was rescued by some of his colleagues.

PC Omar Ramroop, 33, was found around 3:30 am. His limbs were tied with straps and he was sweating profusely because of the bag over his head.

Ramroop told police that he was walking along the Eastern Main Road in Curepe on Friday around 8:45 pm, when he was confronted by two men. They shoved him into a white Nissan Tiida and snatched his wallet containing $300 in cash. The men beat Ramroop and drove off with him. They then drove for a while and upon reaching the north bound carriageway of the Solomon Hochoy Highway, they threw him out.

Dazed and shaken, Ramroop tried to free himself. He spent more than five hours in the bushes before he managed to wiggle his way out. A team of officers from the Highway Patrol Unit later saw Ramroop and rescued him near the Claxton Bay Flyover.

He was taken to the San Fernando General Hospital where he was medically examined. Ramroop worked with the Police Transit Unit in Port-of-Spain. St Joseph police are continuing investigations.
