OWTU gears up for protest action

The Oilfield Workers' Trade Union (OWTU) is ramping up for massive protest action, following the alleged wrongful dismissal of three Petrotrin employees from the Port and Marine department.

Patrick Patterson, Lester St Lewis and Stephen Mohammed were fired for failing to report for duty during an Ebola scare at the Port and Marine department last year.

The dismissal letter was signed by Petrotrin’s senior manager of Marketing and Trading Sims Sookhoo and was dated June 29.

However, OWTU president general Ancel Roget said the dismissal was part of a sinister plot to get rid of all employees opposed to the privatisation of the potentially lucrative ex-barge bunkering business.

He said that moves were afoot to fire 37 more employees.

Addressing employees outside the Pointe-a-Pierre Roundabout yesterday, Roget called on his comrades to assist him in mobilising to prevent the government from selling state-owned assets.
